UNITED ENGINEERING FOUNDATION

2009 ANNUAL REPORT

The United Engineering Foundation successfully maintained its heritage as an important member of the organized engineering community throughout 2009. It did so by continuing its substantial program of grants as outlined in this annual report. Its vision of advancing the engineering arts and sciences for the welfare of humanity was indeed successfully met.

The nine grants funded in 2009 totaled $729,000, another record investment by the United Engineering Foundation. This sum underscores the Foundation's continuing success in contributing to the engineering profession. The grants included:

  1. $150,000 to WGBH to support the development of Season III of DESIGN SQUAD, a PBS engineering television series targeted to 9 to 12-year olds and designed to attract them to engineering;
  2. $100,000 to AIME, with ASCE, ASME, AIChE and IEEE as partners, to expand the depth and accessibility for the Emerging Leaders Alliance;
  3. $38,000 to ASME to support a collaborative effort among a large number of engineering societies including ASCE, AIChE, ASME, AIME and IEEE-USA to host the Engineering Public Policy Symposium in 2009;
  4. $125,000 to AIChE, as the principal grantee for a number of societies to further the project entitled "Dialogues Across Discipline Borders: Implementing Technologies for Carbon Management;"
  5. $75,000 to ASME, with ASCE and Engineers Without Borders-USA to develop and produce a Faculty Forum Program, a service-learning project, for potential formal use in the engineering curriculum;
  6. $100,000 to AIME to support an international cross-disciplinary workshop, Engineering Solutions for Sustainability: Materials and Resources;
  7. $50,000 to JETS to distribute a career guidance resource, "Explore," to some 20,000 high school career counselors and to obtain online feedback information for future materials and contacts;
  8. $40,000 to ASCE on behalf of the Global Anti-Corruption Education and Training Initiative, for the development of training materials and a study guide for a program aimed at ethical decision-making on construction projects worldwide.
  9. $51,000 to IEEE to support a collaborative effort among IEEE, ASCE, ASME and JETS for a project entitled "Engineering Societies and Teacher Associations; Collaborations That Promote Engineering."

During the formal concept paper and proposal cycle in 2009, forty three (43) concept papers were received. This is a record number and it continues to reflect the expanding recognition of the United Engineering Foundation as an important source of support for the engineering profession. From the concept papers received, twelve (12) complete proposals were invited. The Board of Trustees ultimately approved eight (8) of them totaling $608,000 for funding in 2010 as follows:

  1. $100,000 to AIME, with ASCE, ASME, AIChE and IEEE as partners, to further expand the accessibility for the Emerging Leaders Alliance.
  2. $75,000 to WGBH to support the development of DESIGN SQUAD: Nates Roadtrip, phase IV of the PBS engineering television series targeted to 9 to 12-year olds and designed to attract them to engineering.
  3. $115,000 to AIChE as the principal grantee for a number of societies to further the project entitled "Dialogues Across Discipline Borders: Implementing Technologies for Carbon Management."
  4. $100,000 to ASME to support a joint effort with a number of other societies to provide online collaboration, tools, resources, expertise and forums with the goal of helping underserved communities to find solutions to basic needs.
  5. $38,000 to ASME to support a collaborative effort among a number of
  6. engineering societies including ASCE, AIChE, ASME and IEEE-USA to host the Engineering Public Policy Symposium in 2010.
  7. $40,000 to JETS to expand the affiliate program with the ultimate goal of helping students realize their potential for engineering and discover career opportunities an engineering major provides.
  8. $40,000 to the National Institute for Engineering Ethics, Texas Tech University, for the development, assessment and distribution of "Henry's Daughters", an educational movie on engineering and ethics.
  9. $100,000 to AIChE as the principal grantee for a number of societies to enable the development and demonstration of a pilot program for a web-enabled, biological engineering laboratory.

As we look forward into 2010, we note that the United Engineering Foundation, founded in 1904, will operate in its second year as a private foundation. The Foundation remains committed to continue as an efficient organization in order to optimize its ability to provide grants for the greater engineering community.
