UNITED ENGINEERING FOUNDATION

2007 ANNUAL REPORT

The United Engineering Foundation continued to advance the engineering arts and sciences for the welfare of humanity throughout the 2007 year. In so doing, it again matched its program of grants to its Vision.

The grants funded by the Foundation in 2007 included:

  1. $65,000 to the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), as Secretariat, to support the Extraordinary Women Engineers Project;
  2. $150,000 to the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to support collaboration among a number of engineering societies and teacher associations;
  3. $55,000 to ASCE for a collaborative effort among a number of engineering societies to publicize Design Squad, a PBS kids engineering television series;
  4. $60,000 to ASCE as organizer for a number of organizations for an educational video for Reducing Global Corruption in Engineering Projects;
  5. $30,000 to the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering (NACME) to support research for the publication of a Research Guide for Minority Parents;
  6. $135,000 to the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) and partners to develop a Sustainability Index;
  7. $45,000 to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) to support a collaborative effort among a number of engineering societies to host the 2007 Engineering Research and Development Symposium; and
  8. $35,000 to the National Academy of Engineering (NAE) to support a workshop entitled "The Engineering Curriculum: Understanding the Design Space and Exploiting the Opportunities."

Additionally, outside of the normal grant cycle, the Board funded a grant of $25,000 to the Virginia Tech College of Engineering to assist in defraying unanticipated expenses incurred as a result of the horrific and unprecedented events that occurred on the Virginia Tech campus.

The grants funded in 2007 totaled $600,000 including $575,000 for the normal annual cycle and the out-of-cycle grant of $25,000. This is the largest one-year grant funding total in many years.

During the normal concept paper and proposal cycle in 2007, twenty-eight (28) concept papers were received. This large number attests to the continuing recognition of the Foundation as a source of support for the engineering profession. From the concept papers received, 12 full proposals were invited and the Board ultimately approved 8 of them for funding in 2008 as follows:

  1. $75,000 to ASCE as Secretariat for continuing support of the Extraordinary Women Engineers Project, a coalition of partnering societies, academic institutions and others;
  2. $125,000 to IEEE to support a collaborative effort among IEEE, ASCE, ASME, and JETS (Junior Engineering Technical Society) for a project entitled "Engineering Societies and Teacher Associations: Collaborations that Promote Engineering;"
  3. $100,000 to WGBH to support the development of Season II of DESIGN SQUAD, a Public Broadcasting System engineering television series targeted to 9 to 12 year olds and designed to attract kids to engineering;
  4. $40,000 to JETS to create on online academic assessment tool, ASSESS Online, to guide students toward academic preparation for a career in engineering;
  5. $95,000 to ASME as principal grantee for an interdisciplinary group to develop a Teacher's Supplement for the Engineers Without Boarders-USA documentary;
  6. $98,000 to AIME, with ASCE, ASME, and AIChE as partners, to create a curriculum for an Emerging Leaders Institute, establish an online community and present a pilot offering;
  7. $60,000 to ASME to support a collaborative effort among a number of engineering societies including ASCE, AIChE, ASME, AIME and IEEE-USA to host the 2008 Engineering Research and Development Symposium; and
  8. $20,000 to AIChE for a pilot activity related to a Technologies for Carbon Mitigation Project.

The Foundation's operations continued in an efficient manner thereby maximizing funds for awarding grants and meeting the Foundation's important mission in a commendable manner.

The breadth of the projects supported in 2007 and committed for the year ahead attest to the Foundation's positive contributions to the furtherance of the engineering profession. We are proud to be able to report that the Foundation is poised to continue this support into the future.
